We've been assigned the task of picking a written work (phone book or tax laws, anyone?) and then developing a non-linear flash project. In regards to the text we’ve chosen to use for the project we are to answer the following:
1) You have chosen a text in explore in a new form, a new type of media.
2) What interests you about this text in particular?
3) What interests you about this text in particular in relationship to its potential
as a new media form, in relationship to its potential as a Flash file?
4) What are some initial thoughts, or early ideas on how you plan to realize this story
in Flash?
I’ve chosen to base my work on The Hunting of the Snark, by Lewis Carroll and published in 1874. The full text may be read at this link: Carroll’s Snark.
One of the things that drew me to this work was reading Jabberwocky, also by Carroll. I had originally thought of doing the project on Jabberwocky, but decided it wasn’t long enough, nor did it depict enough raw visual imagery for my project, thus I moved on to The Hunting of the Snark.
In addition to needing a longer source material, I also like the abstract, non-sense wording mixed with a strong rhythmical / rhyming style.
As far as using this as source material to translate into a new media form, I think the contrast, even irony, of using something written 135 years ago to base a cutting edge media project on is just a great idea.
As far as my initial direction in which to go, I’ll be embedding key lines from the work within the flash project as visual and audible anchors.
As the original was written in eight fits, I will possibly structure the flash around 8 key components or objects within the overall structure.
This will be an abstract project with associational content between the different elements, both visually and audibly.
